How much should you spend on a mattress?

By Joan Westlake

The price of a good night’s sleep varies from person to person.

“If you purchase a top-quality (mattress) set for $1,200, you’ll be spending less than 35 cents a day for those 10 years of comfortable rest.”
 —  Duke Pollock, Bedmart Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Science is discovering more and more about how vital sleep is to your health. Short term, the lack of quality sleep disrupts daily functions and contributes to errors at work and car crashes on the road. Long term, research is discovering that aging may relate to disrupted sleep patterns.

The right mattress figures into how well you sleep, so when the time comes to buy one, “we suggest spending as much as you can, without losing sleep over it,” joked Duke Pollock, vice president of sales and marketing for Bedmart. “Seriously, you need to look at buying a mattress as a long-term investment. You’ll get at least a decade of use from a quality mattress. If you purchase a top- quality set for $1,200, you’ll be spending less than 35 cents a day for those 10 years of comfortable rest. That’s less than a pack of gum or cup of coffee.”

The average consumer spends from $700 to $900 for a queen set at Bedmart. You can find a set that will deliver a good night’s sleep priced from $399 to $3,000, Pollock said.

The most important consideration? Make sure it’s the ideal bed for you. A firm surface might be perfect for one person but a tossing-and-turning nightmare for another. Some people sleep soundly on a little basic cushioning while others require special technology to get their eight hours of quality shut eye.

Labor-intensive foam

“While price doesn’t guarantee the best mattress, generally the more you spend, the more advanced the technology you are buying,” Pollock said. “That means more components of the mattress designed to help you sleep better. If you have medical issues, Visco memory foam and latex are often excellent solutions, but they are more expensive because they’re labor intensive.”
Some consumers look to their beds not only as a place to lay their weary heads, but also to make a fashion statement. They want the same quality and prestige in their bedrooms that a designer label reflects in their clothing or home furnishings.

Designers such as wedding gown maven Vera Wang bring couture elegance to the boudoir. Even before they see the Vera Wang name imprinted in the mattress cover, women recognize the designer’s signature style.
“Customers come into Bedmart specifically to select from our Vera Wang collection,” Pollock said. “The beds have a wedding gown print and aura about them and are truly standout among the showroom vignettes.” A queen-size Vera Wang mattress is priced around $900.

“Bedmart has a great mattress to fit anyone’s budget,” Pollock said. “You’ll find your perfect bed at the right price so you can get a great night’s sleep.”
